Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region Jitendra Singh said that the abrogation of Article 370 will have no implication on the Northeast region, which is protected under Article 371.
Speaking on the sidelines of the inaugural session of the 22nd National Conference on e-Governance in Shillong, Singh said that the people of the Northeast region should put their fears to rest as the connotations and implications of Article 370 and 371 are different.
It may be mentioned, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on August 6th, 2019, has assured that the Modi government had no intention to remove the provision of Article 371 of the Indian Constitution from the Northeastern states.
“I would like to assure the Northeastern states that the Narendra Modi government has no intention to remove Article 371,” Shah said in the Lok Sabha during the debate on Article 370. His statement came in reaction to Congress MP Shashi Tharoor’s argument in the House on the matter.
It may be noted, the abrogation of Article 370 which gives special status to Jammu and Kashmir has given rise to uncertainty and apprehensions amongst the people of Northeast. Most of the Northeastern states have been accorded special provisions under Article 371. Special status aims to preserve their tribal culture.
