Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, better known as PS Golay, on August 3rd, 2019 offered prayers to Goddess Ma Kamakhya Devi at Her historic temple atop Nilachal Hill here.
Tamang said he prayed for the well-being, peace, prosperity and happiness of the people of Sikkim. He also wished for a better future and progress for the state.
It may be mentioned, the Kamakhya temple is one of the oldest of the 51 Shakti Peethas. Situated in the western part of Guwahati city, the main temple in a complex of individual temples dedicated to the ten Mahavidyas of Saktism.
The temple attracts hundreds and thousands of pilgrims and tourists from various parts of the globe during the Ambubachi Mela.

Tamang is the founder of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM). Prior to forming the party, he was a key member of the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) Party. Ending the 24-year rule of the Pawan Kumar Chamling led SDF, Tamang led the SKM to victory in 2019 assembly elections winning 17 out of 32 seats in the legislative assembly.
He, who was appointed on May 27th, 2019, needs to be elected to the Assembly within six months of his appointment. But he is barred from contesting polls as he has been convicted in a corruption case. Tamang was sent to jail in 2017 after he was found guilty of misappropriating government funds worth Rs 9.5 lakh in a milch cow distribution scheme.
His fate now rests with the Election Commission of India as he has reportedly requested a waiver of the remaining period of his disqualification to retain the post.
